The Science Behind Clean Beauty in 2025

Walk into any beauty store and you'll see "clean," "natural," and "non-toxic" on half the shelves. But there's no universal legal standard for any of these terms. So what does clean beauty actually mean — and how do you shop for it intelligently?

The Regulatory Gap

The FDA does not define "clean" or "natural" for cosmetics. These terms are entirely marketing language. A product can legally call itself "clean" while containing synthetic preservatives, fragrance allergens, or ingredients banned in the EU. This is why ingredient literacy — not label trust — is your best tool.

Ingredients Worth Avoiding

Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben): Synthetic preservatives with potential endocrine-disrupting effects. Low-risk in small doses, but worth minimizing in daily-use products.

Synthetic fragrance: The catch-all term "fragrance" or "parfum" can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, including known allergens and sensitizers. Opt for products that list specific essential oils or are fragrance-free.

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: DMDM Hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15 slowly release formaldehyde — a known carcinogen — over a product's shelf life.

Oxybenzone in sunscreens: Evidence suggests this chemical sunscreen filter can penetrate skin and has shown hormonal activity in studies. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are often preferred in clean formulations.

Ingredients You Can Trust

Hyaluronic acid: Naturally occurring, excellent hydration, well-studied safety profile at all molecular weights.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Brightening, pore-minimizing, and anti-inflammatory. One of the most researched and universally well-tolerated actives.

Bakuchiol: Plant-derived retinol alternative with similar collagen-stimulating effects and dramatically better tolerability for sensitive skin.

Squalane: Derived from sugarcane or olives, deeply moisturizing, non-comedogenic, and stable at room temperature without synthetic preservatives.

How NuBeauty Hub Screens Brands

Every brand on our platform goes through a 27-point editorial review before listing. We require full ingredient transparency, cruelty-free certification, and a clean formulation standard that aligns with EU cosmetics regulations — one of the strictest in the world. When in doubt, we ask brands to reformulate.
